With over 2,000 products available for purchase, Columbia wanted to automate product recommendations, initially on their US storefront. The existing manual system was expensive and inefficient. Most importantly, they wanted to provide more relevant and personalized product recommendations for a better shopping experience. With a total of 25 ecommerce websites worldwide, the manual system would be expensive to replicate on all websites.
In searching for an automated product recommendations product, Columbia was looking to provide a better shopping experience for their customers, convert more browsers to buyers, and increase revenue while at the same time reducing the cost of recommendations.

With an inventory of 5,000 costumes, a manual system was used to link individual items to a specific product in order to create recommendations. This was a labor-intensive process and any change to either the product or linked items (i.e. new colors, discontinued, etc.) required the linking to be redone. DrinkUpNY serves a sophisticated and knowledgeable clientele with a unique product line of artisanal wine and spirits. Although they have a traditional brick-and-mortar store, their ecommerce site accounts for the majority of their business.
The company originally began using manual, category-level product recommendations from their ecommerce platform, but quickly found that they simply weren’t granular enough. This often resulted in recommended products that were arbitrary and ultimately irrelevant to the shopper. A classic example of this can be seen in the whiskey category. It is one that is very broad, with at least 12 ways to sub-categorize, and includes everything from scotch to rye. With such a discerning online customer base, it didn’t make sense to serve up rye recommendations if a shopper was looking for Highland single-malt scotch whiskeys.

Sgt Grit has over 7,500 items available in their storefront. It used to take the purchasing department 40 hours a month to figure out which products to promote together. Creativity was required, and pairing was often done by searching on terms (i.e. Semper Fi) to find products that might be sold together. This “hunt-n-peck” system was labor intensive, cumbersome, inefficient and most importantly, produced some pretty random product recommendations.
Right Business, Wrong eCommerce Platform
In order to grow their business, Sgt Grit recognized their existing ecommerce system had some serious limitations, including requiring several consultants taking up to 6 months to implement enhancements. This international company knew they could do better with their ecommerce presence, and started looking for cutting edge technologies to help ramp sales.
Having worked with a member of our team on ecommerce projects before, Icebreaker knew that 4-Tell’s personalized product recommendations solution would be robust. They decided to implement us on their redesigned product page, along with ratings/reviews and an improved image server. Since our product was ready to go on day one, Icebreaker decided to immediately roll-out 4-Tell product recommendations in their shopping cart. HMK USA is a pioneer in the snowmobile boot category. They’ve come a long way since their early days and have now expanded their product line from snowmobile boots to outerwear, apparel and accessories. The problem was that most shoppers came to their site for the well-known boots and didn’t venture beyond. How could HMK highlight more of their product line to consumers and sell deeper into their catalogue?

SmartPak Canine had employees entering manual product recommendations for each product. Most of the recommendations were alternative or substitute items. This is common with manual recommendations. They wanted 4-Tell to boost sales from automated, intelligent personalized product recommendations.
4-Tell Boost® Recommendations for Web was the perfect solution since we worked straight out of the box. The implementation was simple.
SmartPak tracks revenue from users who click on and then buy a recommendation in the same shopping session. Our system outperformed their manual system by a 36% increase in revenue directly from 4-Tell product recommendations. Furthermore, they didn’t need to waste employee time and expenses to enter recommendations since our system is automated and intelligent. Finally, there are additional increases in revenue from customer loyalty built from good personalized product recommendations, including repeat customers and those who only stay on a site if they feel it is good and up-to-date.

HitchSource Sales Increase by 10%
Half of HitchSource’s product catalog is specific to each car. For example, the 2013 Dodge Dakota hitch goes only with the 2013 Dodge Dakota wiring harness. This makes it difficult to create personalized product recommendations and even more difficult to have a large effect with recommendations.
4‑Tell Boost Product Recommendations for Web was the perfect solution since we easily enable the customer to implement proprietary business rules on top of our system. HitchSource used this capability to create filters so that we recommended deeper into their catalog (and not across car models), such as showing that they have a chrome plated ball for the 2013 Dodge Dakota hitch.
We performed A/B testing, where half the visitors were shown recommendations and half were not shown recommendations. Amazingly, the visitors that were shown recommendations spent 10% more per visit compared to the visitors that were not shown 4‑Tell product recommendations.
